Birds in the Elkhorns

HURRY, HURRY:
COMMENT DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2010sm_Red-naped Sapsucker

MDF is working with several community partners to develop a birding tour in the Elkhorn Mountains SE of Helena. Currently this is a work in progress and we would love your input!

The Elkhorns are an amazing island mountain range with a rich and colorful history. The tour routes will combine elements of the human history with the diverse and outstanding natural history while emphasizing the birds. Each of the three routes will take birders into a variety of habitats on each side of the mountains and provide both driving tour and hiking opportunities.

Please take some time to look at the draft documents below and comment on the following:

  1. Location of the routes
  2. Ease of access
  3. Concerns with route (e.g. nesting sites of goshawks, lack of facilities, etc.)
  4. Suggestions for alternate routes
  5. Suggestions for additional hiking trails
  6. Suggestions for specific points with great viewing opportunities
  7. What you would like to see on the maps of the routes
  8. Brochure layout suggestions
  9. Other bird species to watch for
  10. Any other comments?

The two documents below are the same material in different formats. The brochure is to be printed on a tabloid (11x17”) sheet and folded. The booklet takes the information on the brochure and enlarges the information on 8 1/2 x 11” sheets.

Discover the Nature of the Elkhorn Mountains booklet (1.9 MB)

The birding list with 41 species has been compiled from three sources: Birds and Burns data, Helena National Forest Bird Count data, and Montana’s Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Strategy. We know this document is not a complete reflection of the numerous species in the Elkhorns. Please help us fill out this list with points along the proposed routes.

Our thanks to the many people and organizations who have contributed to this project to date:
