What to do in the area: The area around the cabin has been dramatically altered by the fire of 2000. The Forest is allowing a recovery period with plans for the cabin to be available to the public in 2003. You'll be able to see first hand how a forest recovers from devastating wildfire. The hiking opportunities still available will be found right out the cabin door, with numerous miles of forest roads to explore—including Hellgate, Avalanche and Confederate Gulches as well as the eastside of the mountain range toward White Sulphur Springs. Don’t miss a chance to hike the Belt Divide Trail as well as the Bar Gulch trail. Expect to see wildlife early in the morning and in the evening on the surrounding hills. And, Canyon Ferry Lake is just five miles down the road.
