When formed in 1999, the Foundation was originally called the Helena Forest Foundation. HFF's name was changed in 2004 to the Montana Discovery Foundation to reflect the Foundation's purpose of supporting natural resource education and stewardship for a broader area than the Helena National Forest. The Foundation's mission and purpose is the same as the day it was founded.
The Foundation was created by community leaders who saw the need for an organization dedicated to supporting the needs of the Helena National Forest to provide critical services to communities (see the Foundation's statements of Mission and Purpose). The founding members were leaders and businessmen who had ideas on filling gaps in visitor information services and education programs, and how to generate and leverage funds to enhance the Forest's ability to manage the Forest. A volunteer Board of Directors was established to oversee operations and they meet on a monthly basis.
The Board of Directors is comprised of individuals with an array of interests-teachers, lawyers, ranchers, publisher, financial advisor, business managers, and business owners. With this representation of interests, the Foundation has an opportunity for broad-based support throughout the community.
